Run a quiz for a room without downloading anything
A quiz night falls apart in the ten minutes before it starts. Somebody is installing an app, somebody else is being emailed a join code that will not paste, one person is on a laptop with no camera and cannot get in at all, and the question everybody came for is still sitting in a document nobody can open. None of that is the quiz. It is the tooling in front of the quiz.
So this one is a page. You type your questions, mark the right answer on each, and press Create. Two links come back: a six-character one to read out to the room, and one that is yours alone. Everyone opens the first, types a name, and waits. You drive the rest.
How to run one
- Write between one and ten questions, each with two to four answers, and mark the right one.
- Press Create quiz. Two links come back.
- Share the first — six characters, so it can be read aloud or written on a whiteboard.
- Keep the second, and keep it off the projector. It is how you run the quiz, and it shows you the answers.
- Watch the names arrive in the lobby, then press Start when the room is in.
- Read the question out. Your page tells you how many people have answered.
- Press Reveal. Everybody sees the right answer and the scores move. Then press Next.
Three things worth knowing before you start
Nothing moves until you press something. There is no countdown, so a room that needs another twenty seconds gets another twenty seconds, and a host whose phone locked mid-round comes back to exactly the question they left. If you close the tab in the middle of a game nothing is lost and nothing is broken — the quiz simply sits on whatever it was showing, and everybody sits with it, because the button that moves it is behind your link. Open that link again on any device and carry on. If you never come back, the page stays on that question until it expires.
One point per right answer, and no points for being quick. The FAQ below has the long version. The short one is that a speed bonus would be scoring how good somebody’s wifi is, and we would rather have a score nobody can argue with. Equal scores are listed by name, so the order of a tie means nothing and does not pretend to.
Anyone with the link can type a name. There is a word filter, and it is a first line rather than a wall. Every player on your manage page has a Remove button that takes their name and their answers off the page for everybody, the page carries a Report link that takes the whole quiz down on one click, and your manage link is what puts it back. Open this to a room you would open a whiteboard to.
Good uses
- A pub quiz round, where half the table is on a phone anyway.
- The last fifteen minutes of a workshop, as a check on what actually landed.
- A classroom, where thirty answers arrive at once instead of four hands going up.
- An icebreaker about the team, which is the only quiz anybody ever remembers.
When to use something else
A quiz has right answers. If what you want is the room’s opinion rather than its knowledge, that is Live Poll, and it counts votes without anybody being wrong. If you want questions from the room rather than at it, that is Live Q&A. And if you need long written answers, this is the wrong shape: everything here is multiple choice, on purpose, because four buttons is what fits on a phone and what a room can answer in ten seconds.
Questions people ask
- Does anyone need an account?
- No. You write the questions, you read out the code, and people join. Nobody has to sign up, nobody has to give an email address, and nobody installs anything. The organiser can sign in if they want to keep it past ninety days and find it again without the link — that is the only thing an account does here, it is optional, and it changes nothing for anybody else. The link works in whatever browser is already open, which is the phone in their hand.
- Can players see the answers before I reveal them?
- No, and not by opening a developer console either. The right answers are kept in a part of the database that the browser key on this site is not allowed to read at all, so they are in nothing the page downloads and in nothing sent over the live connection. When you press Reveal, that one question's answer is published and no other. The one way to give the game away is to put your own manage page on the big screen — that page shows you the answers, because you need them, so keep it on your own screen.
- Is there a timer, or points for answering quickly?
- Neither, on purpose. Nothing moves until you press the button, so a phone that locked in your pocket does not race through three questions without you. And there is no speed bonus, because the only clock we could trust is the one in our database — which measures how long the question took to reach somebody's phone and their answer took to come back, rather than how fast they thought. On a room full of phones on one wifi that ranks the connection, not the player. Everyone gets one point per right answer.
- What if somebody joins late, or picks a silly name?
- Late is fine: they can join at any point and score from the next question you reveal. A name you would rather not have on the screen has a Remove button beside it on your manage page, which takes the name and every answer that player gave off the page for everybody. You can put them back from that page until you leave it. Anyone in the room can also report the whole quiz, which hides it until you restore it with your link.
- How long does the quiz stay up?
- Ninety days after the last time anybody used it, and every join, answer and reveal pushes that date out. When ninety quiet days pass the page stops working and everything in it is deleted within a day. There is no archive and no way to get it back, so screenshot the final scores if you want to keep them.
